Star brings home a baby tomato plant from school. It needs water every night. The next morning, Mochi looks at his bowl, and Star asks, “Mom, can this be my job?” Water for Mochi and water for the tomato, every day for seven days. “You decide,” says Mom, and she makes an orange card with seven boxes: “If you forget a day, we try again.”

Day three is a hot, hot day, and the tomato leaves go down. “What can you do?” asks Mom. Star makes a little house with a box and gives the plant water. The next morning, the leaves stand up again! Chen wants to try, but Star says, “Thank you. But it’s my job.” On day five, Star forgets her spoon, and Mom does not take it to her: “Star can fix it.” At lunch there is rice on the desk and rice on Star’s shirt, and Chen gives her a spoon bigger than her face. Everyone laughs. Then Star asks Ms. Lin, “Can I have a spoon, please?”

Day seven. Box seven has no color yet. Dad says, “Not yet. It’s Star’s job.” At bed time, Star remembers: “Oh no! I forgot the water!” Mochi is on the watering can. “Mochi! Move, please!” At eight fifty-nine, one minute before bed, the tomato gets its water. “Check, please!” One more star in the jar: sixteen! And later, there is a baby tomato on the plant. “Hi, Tiny!”
